Dear Friends,
We associate the month of June with weddings and Father’s Day. For some reason, Father’s Day is not as significant as Mother’s Day. There are obvious explanations: fathers are not sentimentalists, fathers don’t care about “presents” or that father’s are not vocal about emotions. Fathers do have as much of an influence on our lives as our Mothers; albeit different. One of Eminem’s most famous songs expresses incredible rage about a father he never knew. The ending show for this season’s NCIS involves a tumultuous relationship between a father and son. The series “The Pacific” brought a flood of memories to me about my own father. He served on the battleship USS San Francisco and was in every major battle in the South Pacific. He taught me about commitment and sacrifice. Whatever memory one holds of a father, be it good or bad, it is the time to reflect on those memories and their meanings.
Black jade can be jadeite or nephrite. Iron gives black jade its color. Some of the finest quality black jade comes from the state of Wyoming. Other sources include Guatemala, New Zealand and Australia. Jade is the toughest of all gem material. The existence of tools, dishes and jewelry dating back to 3500 BC is a testament to this durability. It is however, only 6 ½ - 7 in hardness on the Mohs scale. Even an emerald can scratch it. For the Chinese and the Indians of Mesoamerica, jade was not merely a gemstone with unusual properties. It protected the bearer from illness and misfortune. It offered a voice to the gods.
